    Watona Park Master Plan

    July 18, 2025

Watona Park Master Plan: A Massive Move Forward

July is National Park and Recreation Month, a time to celebrate the unsung heroes who tirelessly create and maintain the much-needed outdoor spaces where people connect with nature, lasting memories are forged, and community spirit truly thrives. For four decades, the National Recreation and Park Association has ensured these vital contributors are never forgotten, highlighting Park and Recreation Professionals Day on July 18th.

This year’s theme, "Build Together, Play Together," couldn't be more fitting for Madelia! The city is actively pouring its heart into the Watona Park Master Plan. Whether you’ve proudly called Madelia home for years or are dreaming of planting new roots here, the entire Madelia area is working hard to have an even more welcoming and playful environment for everyone, from young residents to wise elders.

    Watona Park: Rising Stronger

The Watona Park Master Plan was originally drafted in 2019, outlining necessary upgrades for this beloved park. However, progress faced an unexpected pause after the 100-year flood in June 2024. This historic event brought immense challenges, severely damaging structures and leading to a year-long closure of the golf course. But true to Madelia's resilient spirit, the city is not just rebuilding – it is reimagining!

The master plan has been revamped to integrate redevelopments, ensuring Watona Park not only recovers but emerges stronger and more sustainable than ever. This vital work will unfold in strategic phases, powered by dedicated funding and strong community partnerships.

And here’s where the community spirit truly shines! As of June 2025, the Taylor Family Farm Foundation generously offered an incredible $50,000.00 donation, specifically for Watona Park’s new splash pad! This fantastic, family-friendly addition was originally incorporated into the master plan in August 2024 to replace the old kiddie pool, and a dedicated committee has been working to bring this exciting feature to life. With an estimated cost of $239K, this substantial donation is a huge splash in the right direction, helping Madelia maintain incredible momentum for its revitalization efforts!

While the splash pad is certainly a major highlight, Watona Park has other enhancements and changes underway! The golf course, located just north of the recently renovated pool, has reopened its greens with a temporary Clubhouse.

    Changes Coming Soon:

    • Turf Grass for open play areas, picnics, games, and relaxation.
    • ADA Accessible Concrete Sidewalks, ensuring everyone in the community can comfortably navigate and enjoy every corner of the park.
    • Improved Bituminous Parking for smoother and more convenient access.
    • A brand-new, modern Bathhouse for comfort and convenience.

    Looking Ahead:

    • A scenic Bituminous Trail for walking, running, and biking enthusiasts.
    • Additional Concrete Sidewalks to seamlessly connect more areas of the park.
    • A new Playground designed for the younger residents.

    Remaining Favorites:

    • Convenient Parking near the pool.
    • Renovated pool is ready for a refreshing dip on hot summer days.
    • Basketball Courts.
    • Parking near the basketball courts.
